The Sprucewood Wind Project is being explored in Strait Shores and would contribute clean, renewable energy to New Brunswick’s electricity system while considering local environmental, recreational, and community priorities.
Location: Strait Shores, New Brunswick Status: Early-stage planning and investigation; we are in the process of surveying the land to determine its suitability for a wind energy project and understand the existing environmental features that will influence the project design. A response to NB Power’s Request for Expressions of Interest (REOI) has been submitted to seek an opportunity to sell energy from the project to the Utility. Next Steps: Environmental specialists will survey the area and collect baseline data to guide the project design. The project will continue through NB Power’s REOI review process and await feedback from the Utility.
The following section provides more information about the RFEOI process and what this stage means for the project.
The project has been submitted to New Brunswick Power Corporation as part of its Request for Expressions of Interest (REOI) process for renewable energy projects. This stage allows developers to explore potential projects and determine whether they may proceed to future procurement stages.
During this period, there may be ongoing dialogue between the project team and NB Power as potential projects are reviewed. In parallel, preliminary activities such as soil and site investigations will be undertaken to help inform early planning and better understand site conditions.
Environmental protection is a central consideration throughout project planning. Independent specialists will carry out field studies to better understand local wildlife, habitat areas, water resources, and seasonal patterns. This work will help inform infrastructure placement and establish appropriate setbacks and mitigation measures.
Please note, development will not occur within protected areas such as Murray Beach Provincial Park or the Cape Jourimain National Wildlife Area, and study findings will be shared as they become available.
wpd Canada’s projects bring benefits to host communities through job creation, local economic activity, and support for local businesses during construction and operations.
We are committed to listening to residents, business owners, and local officials to understand their priorities and concerns. Based on this feedback, we will develop community benefit programs tailored to the community’s needs. This could include investment in new or existing community facilities, enhancement to recreational trails or funding to offset electricity costs.
Further details will be shared as they become available.
We recognize the importance of building respectful and collaborative relationships with Indigenous Nations whose traditional territories include the project area.
We have started engagement with First Nations and are committed to continuing this dialogue throughout the planning and development of the project. Our approach is guided by a commitment to open communication, respect for Indigenous rights and knowledge, and meaningful participation in project discussions.
As planning progresses, we look forward to working with First Nations to listen, learn, and explore opportunities for partnership.
Health and safety are priorities throughout the full lifecycle of any wind project, including planning, construction, operation, and decommissioning. The Sprucewood Wind Project would be required to meet all applicable provincial standards, environmental regulations, and safety requirements.
This project is currently in the early stages of planning. We are committed to transparent, ongoing collaboration with community members as the project evolves.
Our engagement process will provide opportunities for local residents and organizations to learn more about the project, ask questions, and share feedback that can help inform project planning.
Please check back regularly for updates and details on upcoming consultation opportunities. We welcome your questions and feedback, and encourage you to contact us anytime at sprucewoodwind@wpd-canada.ca
